Hi Everyone! We are finally back after a Christmas break, and already in 2019!
Hope 2018 was a good year for everyone, and let’s make 2019 even better photographically 🙂
For our January competition, I suggested a theme “City Lights“.
A few days ago, I went to central London to photograph the displays of Christmas lights. Oxford Street, Bond Street, Carnaby Street… I left home just after 6pm with a thought that I will stay for max couple of hours, … well, I got back shortly after midnight… Wow, it was just amazing! And not only the Christmas lights, but generally all the city lights, the buildings, the shops, the pubs and restaurants, the reflections on the streets and pavements… it felt like another world after dark!
I highly recommend this to everyone, especially now, for technical and practical reasons.
It gets dark very early, like today, the sunset is at 4:10pm, so if you don’t want to wander on your own at night, you can start taking pictures as early as 5-6pm.
Taking pictures in the evening / at night, is more technically challenging, but can be more rewarding. You can get really nice effects by playing with long(-er) shutter speeds (trying creative techniques like ICM – just shake your camera a bit 🙂 , walking with your camera, zooming-in/out, spinning, or capturing cars light trails – tripod needed), or freezing motion and testing your camera capabilities in various ISO settings. It makes a great practice and is the fastest way to improve your photography skills!
As always, I created for you a Pinterest board, but you are the artist, get creative!
