From Confused to Confident: Taking Control of Your Camera

Last weekend we hosted another edition of our Intensive DSLR & Mirrorless Beginners Photography Course, led by Rob and attended by a fantastic group of students keen to move beyond Auto mode and take full creative control of their cameras.
One of the attendees, Matt, came equipped with a powerful Canon EOS 5DS R and a newer Canon R10 mirrorless camera. Despite having an impressive collection of DSLR, mirrorless, and even vintage film cameras, he told us he felt like he had “a lot of gear and no idea.” His goal? To get comfortable with manual settings and begin creating more artistic, intentional photographs.
Another pair of students, Clare and her daughter Laura, joined us with their Sony A7 IV and ZV-E10 mirrorless cameras. With a background in journalism and TV, Clare had some experience filming on autofocus but felt it was time to properly understand photography fundamentals – and pass those skills on to her daughter.
I just want to understand the basics – rather than relying on auto settings – and further down the line, filming.
