Capture Authentic Portraits in Vibrant London using Natural Light and Flash
Street Portraits Class
Natural Light and Flash
Embark on an extraordinary journey through the bustling streets of London and discover the art of Street Portraiture. Join us for a captivating one-day portrait photography workshop in the picturesque South Bank area, where you’ll learn to tell stories with your lens and engage with your human subjects in a whole new way.
Street photography, by its very nature, revolves around the inclusion of people. Our workshop takes this concept even further, focusing specifically on the art of portraiture.
We believe that the most powerful portraits are created in collaboration with the people we encounter on the streets. By engaging with the public and building connections, we elevate our portraits to a whole new level. The practical training will not only refine your technical skills but also, this class will empower you to connect with strangers, allowing them to become active participants in the creation of your photographs.

Balance Natural Light and Flash in Street Portraiture
To kickstart the workshop, we’ll begin with a session featuring a talented young actress as our model. Guided by our experienced instructor – Robert Irving, you’ll learn essential techniques for capturing stunning portraits using natural light. We’ll explore the dynamic streets of London, utilising the vibrant surroundings to create striking compositions and masterful use of available lighting.
Building upon this foundation, we’ll then venture deeper into the streets, challenging you to discover and approach your own subjects. With the skills and knowledge you’ve acquired, you’ll have the confidence to select and photograph individuals you haven’t yet met. Through insightful discussions and practical guidance, we’ll explore the art of choosing subjects, approaching them respectfully, and capturing their essence in compelling portraits.
Next, we’ll introduce you to the world of flash photography. While our primary focus is on harnessing the beauty of natural light, we encourage you to bring a flashlight or use an off-camera flash to expand your creative possibilities. Our expert instructor will provide insights on how to balance flash with natural light, creating compelling effects for your outdoor portraits. You’ll explore a variety of uses for flash in outdoor photography, including:
- Illuminate your subject in low light conditions
- Transform unflattering lighting into flawless portraits
- Make your subjects pop off the background
- Add depth and detail with fill light to perfect your portraits
By the end of the workshop, you’ll possess a refined understanding of street portraiture and the ability to create powerful portraits independently, working with the public to tell engaging stories through your photographs.

“I've attended the street course on the South Bank. Rob is such a nice person, he helped everyone with camera settings and gave a lot of tips on how to approach and talk to people you want to photograph. I am much more confident now and hope to practice a lot more on my own. Thank you so much!”
